The Australian Recreation Union (ARU) is a not-for-profit organization representing over 8.2 million Australians engaged in outdoor recreation activities, including four-wheel driving, hunting, and adventure pursuits. We advocate for the protection and promotion of these recreational rights and provide exclusive member benefits to support our community. We are seeking an experienced freelance web developer or manager to handle ongoing website maintenance, updates, and enhancements for our site at https://australianrecreationunion.com/. As ARU grows, we require a reliable partner to ensure our digital presence remains professional, user-friendly, and scalable. Scope of Work The successful freelancer will: Manage and Maintain the Website: Perform regular updates, backups, security checks, and troubleshooting to keep the site running smoothly. Implement Amendments as We Grow: Make content edits, design tweaks, and structural changes based on evolving organizational needs, such as adding new pages, events, or resources. Upgrade the Website: Lead a targeted upgrade to modernize the platform, improving navigation, mobile responsiveness, and overall performance. This includes: Creating a members-only section with restricted access (e.g., via login portals). Uploading and managing exclusive products or offers (e.g., merchandise, discounts, or resources) that are visible only to logged-in ARU members as a key benefit of joining. Integration and Features: Ensure seamless integration with any existing tools (e.g., e-commerce plugins for member-exclusive products) and recommend best practices for user privacy and data security. The initial upgrade phase is estimated at 20 hours, with ongoing management on an as-needed basis (likely to be 5-10 hours/month). Required Skills and Experience Proficiency in WordPress (our current CMS) or similar platforms; experience with custom themes/plugins preferred. Strong knowledge of HTML/CSS, JavaScript, and PHP for custom development. Expertise in e-commerce setups (e.g., WooCommerce) for restricted-access product catalogs. Familiarity with membership plugins (e.g., MemberPress or Restrict Content Pro) to handle exclusive member areas. Understanding of SEO, accessibility (WCAG standards), and GDPR/privacy compliance. Excellent communication skills for collaborating remotely with our small team. Portfolio examples of similar projects for non-profits or membership-based organizations.
