Briefly browse the website of each of the TOP 5 journals and check the publication issues since 2023. Among the recent publications in these five journals, choose ONE RESEARCH ARTICLE that you find interesting and are eager to read. Please pay attention: a research article should include an original research, which is usually indicated by data collection and/or data analysis (it can be either quantitative data or qualitative data). Please exclude purely review articles or theoretical articles. When unsure, please consult the professor before you decide to read and work on the article. Read your chosen research article carefully, and submit your mid-term analysis based on the following criteria. Please first copy and paste the abstract of the article so that the professor can have a quick idea of what your research article is about. Provide a review of the article in your own words and writing (2-3 pages double-spaced). In this part, you want to treat it like you are introducing the article to a classmate or professor who hasn't read the article. You want to tell them what the article is about, what kind of subjects are covered and how, what we can expect to learn from it, what are some strengths and weaknesses of the article, etc. Here is a book review written by the professor. Please aim for a similar writing style, even though the content will be very different, and your review won't be as long. Specifically: How does the research you read relate to the recent wave of immigration we've talked about? Does it address one of the immigration sending/receiving countries we've addressed or not? What new information does it add to the textbook knowledge? Which theories of migration does the research use? Does it address WHY people migrate? If so, does it use push-pull model, the economic model, or network theory, or maybe a combination of them? Does is address HOW immigrants settle in the host country? If so, is it more from the perspective of assimilation, or the perspective of transnationalism? or maybe both? (You haven't learned multiculturalism yet, but if it's mentioned, you can also describe that.) If the article mentions theories you haven't heard of, make sure you also describe them in details and reflect on how they are similar to or different from the theories we have covered. In what ways does learning in the course so far help you understand the research better? Compare before and after you have gained some professional knowledge about the field of immigration studies. GRADING RUBRIC Baseline criteria (without meeting all the criteria here, the assignment is an automatic zero) The article comes from one of the top five journals listed above. The article was published in 2023 or more recently. The article is a research article (instead of pure theory, or just a literature review, or a book review, or editorial notes, etc.) The information of the article (citation and abstract) is given clearly. The work does not involve AI in any parts. Points distributed: Knowledge and understanding of course materials (30%) Student not only actively engage the concepts and ideas included in the readings and the class discussions but demonstrate a correct understanding of them. Application of course materials (30%) Student can identify concepts and ideas in the research article that are connected to the course materials and apply the course materials for deeper understanding of the research. Writing skill (30%) Student knows how to structure a writing assignment that is logically coherent and clear, has few grammatical errors, and demonstrates an academic and professional vocabulary. Overall completion (10%) The completed writing should look clear, polished, well-thought out, and reader-friendly.
